1. Install ANACONDA

You have to download Python 3.5 version (or latest). Depending on the OS version you are running, please select the corresponding version.

2. IPython Notebook

In this class, we will use the IPython notebook for the programming. An IPython notebook lets you write and execute Python codes in your web browser.

  • Go to the directory that you want to work on in the windows file explorer

  • Type 'jupyter notebook' in the URL of the windows file explorer

  • Once IPython is running, point your web browser at http://localhost:8888 to start using IPython notebooks. If everything worked correctly, you should see a screen like this, showing all available IPython notebooks in the current directory:

3. Install Pycharm Community version

3.1. Install Pycharm

  • If you are running a 32-bit OS, check on the box indicated '32-bit launcher'. However, if you are running a 64-bit OS, do not click on the check box.

  • For both cases, please click on the check box indicated '.py'.

  • Accept the privacy policy and choose the keymap scheme, IDE theme, and font.

3.2. How to use Pycharm

Create a New Project.

Set your path and name for your project.

Right click on the the project folder. The project name is set as "untitled" for the example below.

Select New $\rightarrow$ Python file and define your python script name.

3.3. Hello World

Type the sample code below and run.


If your python code is running properly, you should see "Hello" in your console terminal.

4. Installing Packages

4.1. Using PIP

pip pyserial Installation

Open the cmd window as the administrator, and type in the following:

pip install pyserial

The download process will begin soon, and the pyserial module will be successively installed.

When you are finished installing pyserial, install bs4 using the same method. Type the following into the command window

pip install bs4

pip pyqt4 Installation

To install pyqt4 module, you should download the .whl file from the following link. (maybe you need 'PyQt4‑4.11.4‑cp36‑cp36m‑win_amd64.whl')

After finishing downloading, open the cmd window on the download folder as the administrator and type in the following:

pip install PyQt44.11.4cp36cp36mwin_amd64.whl
